Making reservations

A late start to say the least, but making some reservations for summer 2012. In NY state, the public campgrounds can be booked I think 9 months in advance. Vermont is about 11 months. But,,, good old FEMA sites (not many) book only 6 months in advance. Getting a good site...or any site takes planning in advance. You can risk it and wait to the last minute. People often cancel for whatever reason. I don't like to risk it.

I also have a to do list this winter. The last backing into the garage... I scraped off a side light. My co-pilot who was guiding me didn't do the best job. I also have to fix the dog cots. They sound ridiculous, but the dogs do stay cleaner. I think I am going to replace the canvas with old-fashioned webbing.

I am amazed and humbled to the number of people who respond to this blog. I saw tonight I just topped 23,000 hits! wow.

With regret, we're selling our 57 Metzendorf camper, serial # 0005. Thats right, the 5th one built. I have a clear Ohio title in my name. Its 10'6 total length, body is 8'3 long, and 6'3 wide. Its very rare, very cool, and very small! Not for a family! Great for a single person or 2 people if you really like each other! It would be cool behind a 57 chevy, or a hotrod or rat rod! It has a small furnace, propane fridge, 2 burner cooktop, sink. all interior lights work. Has Coker whitewall tires. Tows well. We've used it several times this year. We bought it 3 years ago and put work into it and have been using it ever since. It has a couch that folds into a double bed and a dinette that turns into a bed as well. It does not have the original refidgerator or stove but the hook ups are there as well as the original propane lamp that is above the dinette. There is a sink with a water holding tank that is usable as well as an electrical hook up which works as well. There is a nice size storage cabinet and plenty of other cabinets above the counter, under the bed and under the dinette seating. It is short enough to fit into a regular garage. Well...I didn't go camping. I spent the weekend packing and getting ready to move. I was able to transfer my prime camping site in the Catskills to a friend at work. At least someone I knew got to enjoy the site. We hope to still go camping in the Green Mts for July 4. Due to the purchase of a 'new' house.... it wont be the most adventurous camping summer. At least the camper will get a new home indoors. Where we are moving it is required by law to keep it stored in a garage. Good thing about a Metzendorf....it is built to go in a garage! Having a garage will hopefully allow me to work on her year round.

It looks like spring is on its way. I can finally get to the camper...she was kinda blocked by a lot of snow. There seemed to be a little bit of condensation in the camper, but I haven't fully investigated yet. This spring will be dedicated to house hunting and finding a place that has storage for the little camper!

Columbus Day Weekend

I booked late and got into Wilson Woods in the Catskills. The park was nice, but I was in the loop with all the others who don't plan far ahead....the young partiers and lovers. The beer drinkers were quieter than the lovers next door. It was a cold weekend hovering in the low 40s so I imagine you need to do something to keep warm. I used the furnace!

Hiked some great trails...Overlook Mountain and Tremper Mountain. Was a beautiful weekend. The fall color wasn't as far along as I would have thought.

Well my camper is all closed up for the winter. It was a great camping season. Now is the time to book NYS parks for 2011 season. Wow... is it hard to get the prime site in NYS. I was booted right out of July for my favorite place. I finally got a good site, but couldn't get the exact days in a row I wanted. I am not sure if everyone who is trying to book the site is using the internet...or calling in...or has an in through the state.

This summer's great new camping things

1. Solar outdoor string lights. I usually camp where there is no electricity. The solar lights are awesome for providing just enough light to get around and make the site kinda fun. Best part, the LED don't seem to attract bugs!

2. Super large tarp. For long trips, I got a super large tarp that covers the whole site... 20x30. It really was nice on the long trip when it rained.

3. Wood decking. I got wood decking tiles 2x2 feet. Just six of them. It made a great deck at the door step...and inside the outdoor shower. I got them at a Christmas Tree Shop.

4. Dahon folding bike. I really liked the folding bike....fits in the trailer and makes all the little trips so much faster.

5. Telescoping ladder. It is a real luxury... not used often...but the right tool for the job of putting up the tarp. Best way to get the lines up really high.

6. Large power pack. I got a Wagan power pack... the deluxe model. I was able to recharge it with my solar panel. Was great.

7. Osprey backpack. Love em...got 2 sizes. Got the 35 cu size.

Getting ready for the last camp of the season. Columbus Day in the Catskills. Hope the leaves are at peak. Looking forward to the view from Hunter Mountain!

Rollins Pond, Adirondacks

Spent a week in the Adirondack at Rollins Pond. Rollins is easy access to the St. Regis Canoe Reservation, 18,000 acres of lakes, streams, ponds. The picture of the camper by itself was just before we left. We put up a HUGE tarp that covered our site. I got a telescoping ladder so we could get the tarp up high. I was great on the rainy days. Spent the trip either paddling or hiking. Went up to Avalanche Lake in the high peaks. Was just splendid and saw the remnants of a real avalanche.

Mongaup Pond, Catskills

Took a quick weekend in the Catskills. I knew the weather was going to be good, so we went with the minimal. I think having some type of
awning is always needed to keep the dew off of things. We saw a bear across water from our site. Mongaup has a lot of bears.

I got a Dahon folding bike. It is great for all those little trips. Also use

it for exercising the dogs.

We took the camper out of New York and to the beach! Was quite a different camping experience on all counts. The sites were super small, but we had electric. We stayed at Coastal Acres. We were there at the end of July and it was pretty hot. I purchased a power pack that could charge anything and has a pump. It was really handy.

I hooked up my handheld shower so that it worked like a faucet. Hot water at the campsite is the best!

Summer Travels

Well, I have been neglectful. I have been really busy travelling. This summer has taken me to the Catskills and Hudson River to camp. A great addition this summer has been solar string lights. They are awesome. They are lcd lights and don't really attract bugs. I have a set that were xmas lights and just got some more for summer at Target. They are really worth the 20 bucks. Unfortunately I lost my camera after hiking Slide Mountain, the tallest mountain in the Catskills. I put the camera on the roof of my car and drove...oops. Well I wanted a new one and already replaced it with a little fuji. Love it...water proof and shock proof. These photos are from the Canon and Blackberry. A new addition this year has also been cots for the dogs..they love em and they stay a little cleaner. Next week I am off to Cape Cod for a week, the first time with shore power!!! Should be fun.

here is a shot of the torch lit..but not in its tree hanger. This is when I first made it. I really like using tiki torches to keep the buggies away. ...but hate it when they used to spill. I simply have a jar that i store the wicks in and then seal the top. Works great...and no spills!!

Went to North South Lake for a beautiful weekend in the Catskills. This time had a few new things. I had solar powered string lights which were awesome. Gave just enough light to get around. I also made tiki torches from grolsch beer bottles. It worked out great being able to travel with tiki torches.

I got a few new toys for this season. A folding bike, Dahon. A telescoping ladder. Wood decking for under the outdoor shower.

This is a very "sissy with sass" trailer decorated with a feminine touch. It currently sleeps one but can be made to sleep two. The Metzendorf was built in Ohio by a man named Metzendorf, using Amish labor. It is only 6'2" high, built to fit into a garage. The skin was pulled and all wood and beams from front to back were replaced. The sides were left with original closet and cabinets. Floor is new laminate. Remote control air is installed under the bed. All wiring redone and new outlets and wall lights added. New foam cushions. The trailer tires and spare are 3 yrs old. Bearings have been recently greased. The trailer was professionally painted with light mint green auto paint...most decorations on exterior are decals, but the street side has a custom painted scene of a Victorian Cowgirl getting on her horse. Everything pictured in the interior is included, and most of the items in the exterior picture, plus a reproduction vintage radio that also plays cds, records, cassettes. Well I haven't been here in a while. Been busy moving to a new home. I will start posting soon about the adventures and also have some emails to respond to. I did acquire a new solar panel as my old one has seemed to not charge anymore. I have planned some trips for this year, mainly to the Catskills and Adirondacks. This summer will be interestings, since I will be camping with two dogs in the camper. I also just purchased dog cots for when they are outdoors. I used to just put their beds on a contractor plastic bag. I hope the cots keep the dogs and their beds cleaner!

Today I spent most of the day cleaning up the tin can so she looks a little better for the Tin Can Tourist Rally this coming weekend. It seems to be a never ending chore to keep her shiny. I did a few new little things...as she is a work in progress. I also took out some of my excess gear, as it is just for show and I won't be doing any real cooking or adventures. This weekend will be the first time I use shore power. That will be different.

There is going to be another Metz at the event. I am looking forward to seeing it...as Fletch said it was a total restoration. I don't know that I will ever be "done."

Finger Lakes Tin Can Tourist Rally

I am going to the Fingler Lakes Tin Can Rally this fall. Sorry I didn't post earlier..as it is sold out. You can still come to the park and walk around though. The 2nd Annual Rally will be held September 17-20th at Samspson State Park in Romulus, New York. The event is coordinator by the great Fletch who owns Fletcher's Trailer's in Trumansburg, NY...a great resource for tin cans.

Devil's Tombstone

In July I went to Devil's Tombstone which sits at the foot of Hunter Mountain in the Catskills (the second highest peak in the Catskills). It is a really basic campground that really only serves as a basecamp for hikers. There is no electric here at all, not even in the bathrooms, which are not flush toilets. I think if I want to hike here next summer I would go to North-South Lake Campground. The road the divides this campground is a bit noisy.

My sister loved my trailer so much, she went out and got her own tin can. She got hers on Ebay for about $400. I love the color's she chose. It is a 16 foot and it is amazing how big it is because it is taller. Hers is a 1964. She came up to Rollins Pond as well. She didn't have one of the nice lake front sites.

I have just been too busy camping and no time for blogging. This summer I have been travelling almost every other weekend. I just got back last weekend from my long trip to Rollins Pond in the Adirondacks. It was a great week, despite the pup getting a cold (kennel cough) and being unalble to hike up the big mountains. It doesn't make for a idyllic looking site, but I tarped over my awning and screen room, as the rains can be bad in the Dacks. It does keep a larger area dry.

New this summer

This summer I have done a few things. I had my hitch and electric installed by U-haul. Well, U-haul spliced the wires to install the electric..and it failed after about a year. Well it wasn't so apparent, but i had to have my mechanic fix it. They got the plug in harness for my car and repaired the splice.

The water carrier on wheels is awesome. It is the envy of many at the water spigot. I have city water, but I mainly camp at sites without electric or water.

I installed 12v light fixture that I got at vintage trailer over the dinette. I had the mount where a gas lamp usually goes. I decided to go with electric because I really run most items on a solar power charged deep cell battery. It is great to have another light.

I finally installed a grommet so I have a third pole on my awning. Works much better.

Well, I haven't been here enough. The house not on wheels is consuming my time. I hope it lightens up to work on the migration to the webpage. I did go camping Memorial Day weekend in the Catskills. Was a good time. My dog and his friend go pretty tired hiking to Terrace Mountain on the Wittenberg Trail. I didn't make it to the top of Slide Mountain. A little too far for the first hike of the summer.

Hibernating and dreams of summer....

While the camper is sleeping I have begun to plan the adventures for 2009. It looks like next summer is wrapping up to be adventures in the Adirondacks and Catskill Mountains. You need to book far in advance to get the good sites, or rather lake front sites.

I started thinking of trailer projects for this year. I had planned on putting a gaslight over the dinette, but have opted for another 12 volt light from vintage trailer supply. I will probably get more use out of it. I also think I need to invest in a new solar panel. The one I have is about 7 to ten years old and doesn't seem to work so well anymore. I also am going to get a new portable water jug. NYSDEC campgrounds don't have hookups and I don't have a water tank (yet). I think I am going to get this one. It has a spigot on it and gets good reviews.

I also want to consider getting an easier loading roof rack for the canoe....but some of them cost some big bucks...lol or at least more than the camper cost.

Electric Brakes

Today my car is going in the shop to get electric brakes installed. On the road, I don't really seem to have any problems without the brakes hooked up, but I thought it has just been putting extra wear and tear on my car brakes. I do have a problem though backing the trailer down my gravel driveway that has about a 8% grade. The trailer can pull my car backwards....so I hope the brakes will help. I haven't been doing much on the trailer as house chores have taken over my life....mainly painting the outside. I hope to get it done soon and possible go camping for a weekend before the snow flies.

Charles and Sue sent in some great pics of their 1963 Metzendorf. The photos include showing the prep work, getting reading to paint and then three on the outside after. The inside shows great pics of the natural birch paneling. They are thinking of painting something on the sides of the Metz. They did paint the wheels and Metzendorf lettering an antique blue-green. They went on what sounds like an amazing 8,516 mile trip towing with a Hi-Top van. I love the VW van as well! Some other great shots... son Peter at a campground in Bismarck, ND. Jerrie sent some great photos of their 1960 13 ft Metzendorf. They acquired her in May of 2008 and have been working on it all summer. They did a lot of rewiring and also had to rebuild the seat boxes, new seat cushions made, curtains and installed a 10 gallon fresh water tank with a marine pump and more. No surprise by the pictures that the name of their little trailer is "Hula." Thanks so much for sharing. I would love to know more details on where you put the water tank. I like the access doors that you have to get at the storage area under the dinette seats.

Rollins Pond, the Adirondacks

Just back from 9 night in the Adirondacks. It was just beautiful...and I am exhausted from paddling and hiking. I went with a couple of friends who were in a house of nylon. Too tired to write...I'll just post some pics tonight.

My site was right on the lake. It wasn't the best site...but it was pretty good. We could canoe right from the site and tour the St. Regis Canoe reserve, 18,000 acres of lakes, ponds and streams. We did a few carries. We also hiked Ampersand Mountain and St. Regis Mountain on the cloudy days. It was good to get a little relief from the sun.

I had my Nova Craft canoe and my friends were in kayaks. I use a 9 foot kayak paddle when I am going solo...well kinda solo, but the dog doesn't paddle.

Well... I replaced all the plugs....and still no blinky. There is something wrong with the socket. It got dark..so the saga will continue tomorrow. I hate to do it..but I may have to just use the magnetic lights. :(

Well... the bulb was blown, but that isn't the only problem. I think I have found the problem.... I have multiple connectors to go from a 6 to 4 pin. The 6 pin on the trailer had one terminal that was VERY corroded...despite being only 6 months old. Must be all the rain we have had. I took it apart and cleaned it...but I think I need to get a new one. Worse come to worse... I will geri-rig my magnetic ones on. Hopefully I can fix the lights tomorrow. ugh.

Blinker bulb blew....ugh!!!

My left rear bargman bulb blew. I took the bulb to an auto parts place...and they sold me the wrong one. So...now I will have to search the forums to find the right part number. Today I installed a new 12v light fixture so I can read in bed. I got it at vintage trailer suppley. It was easy to install...and is nice and bright. I also finally took my tire with the slow leak to get fixed. There was a nail in it. Now....just gotta get a bulb for my next trip!!!!

It is always great to see photos of other Metzendorfs. No two seem to be the same. I have gotten great ideas for my trailer. I really like the access to the storage box on both sides of the trailer. Mine storage is like a deep dark hole.

Well this one I found is actually a 1970. From what I understand, the company was sold around 1963. You can still see some of the original design in this one.... if you love 70's decore..this is the Metz for you!

Beaverkill Again!

I went to Beaverkill this past weekend...instead of working on the camper before a big trip to the Dacks. I had a spot once again on the river. I took the photo of the dorf from the river's edge. It was down a bit and had warmed up. I think all the big fish were sleeping...or went to cooler waters. I had a lot of nibbles...but no fish this weekend. I did see a green hummingbird, canvasback ducks.... and a lot of guys wearing a lot of fishing gear. They didn't catch anything either.

Waxing the camper

I only have waxed on side of the trailer. Due to oxidation...the dirt just sticks to her. After my last trip I washed the exterior and realized how dirty she was. So...today I am going to wax the camper and try and get most of the aluminum polished. I also think I am going to paint the rest of the front of the trailer where the paint is pretty worn, but not enough to strip it down to aluminum.

My sister bought a 1960 Shasta 14 foot camper. She is planning on putting her camper into the local vocational program, (BOCES in NYS) to have it painted. She did this with her car and they did a good job. She only has to pay for the paint. It takes a little longer...but it is during the winter. I may consider doing the same if hers turns out good.

Polishing aluminum

When I was cleaning up the boat I used to have, I found this product to clean all sorts of metal products. It does remove rust. Some of the screws that attach the aluminum are a little rusty and this stuff does a good job. Even when the material gets black, it still works well. I sometimes wipe and get the surface wet an then use very, very fine steel wool to help remove the oxidation. I use a clean rag to wipe off the excess black stuff. It is a bit of work, but it does buff up. Before the final buffing, I was the trailer with warm soapy water. The black stuff comes of the white paint with soapy water and then waxing. I am still working on this window...it started getting dark and the skeeters came out.

I actually used Goo Gone to remove the black film. I stumbled upon using it when I was removing some tape from sections of the aluminum. It works better than soapy water. I almost think the final polish with paper towel was better too.

Tonight I took care of a few little projects that bothered me. The rusty cap for the shore power and the license plate bracket. Neither was made of aluminum, so I cleaned them up and then painted them with chrome rustoleum.

Trailering tips

During heavy rainstorms when I am trailering, my front window sometimes leaks. I use a clear duct tape on the middle window joints and it seems to work. I need to replace the gasket, but I wonder if this will really help in heavy downpours.

I also put down the dinette into a bed and cover the cushions with a plastic fitted sheet. I can then put whatever gear on the cushions without really worrying about getting them dirty or wet.

I also bungee the two cabinet handles about the sink. This cabinet often flies open.

I don't have a bumper or a place to put the huge spare tire. I just put this in the drop floor area. It is a pain in the butt at the site...as I have to keep it outside. I just put it in a contractors garbage bag. If it gets wet, I can just put the dry tire in when I pack up and fold up the bag. The contractors bag are rugged enough to hold the heavy tire. I actually keep several on hand to use as mini-tarps while camping.

Camping must haves

So after several trips I started to think about what the must haves are...in no particular order:

Tiki torches. four torches really help to light up the sight without the glare of a lantern. It also does a good job on the bugs.

Coleman on demand hot water. The water heater is the best. It makes washing up not such a chore, weather it be dishes or your body! Especially when you only have a few dishes.

Wood tarp. A piece of scrap tarp to cover the wood and fire pit.

Grill basket. I cook on the fire about 90 percent of the time. Most campsites have a grill on the fire place, but I don't worry about how clean it is if I use a grill basket. I have two.

Butane stove. I have a butane stove that just clicks on. You can use them inside or out. It is really a catering piece of equipment. I get gas canisters at a chinese grocer at 4 cans for $5.99. They don't last as long as propane, but the fire is hotter. I don't cook in the camper much.

Coleman 5-day cooler. I have the one on wheels and it really does work better.

Dining canopy with hanging tent. This has been a great addition to keep gear in and have a space that feels like outside when the weather is icky. My dog likes to stay in there to get away from the flies and bugs.

Porta-potty. Don't like going outside at night. Nuff said.

Door mat. Helps keep the camper clean.

Coleman outdoor kitchen. I have a suitcase kitchen that is a great dish washing stand and prep center.

Plastic table cloth. It is easier to dry off the picnic table with the plastic table cloth.

Saw, hatchet and axe. I refuse to pay $5 for a small bundle of wood. And... never transport firewood. It can devastate a local forest. I also have a pair of hand clippers.

Flannel sheets. I camp in the mountains... much warmer.

WD-40. When it rains, things rust.

Brush and dust pan. camping is dirty.

Rubbermaid bins. I have a heavy duty one for tools and use regular ones for clothing. I use two smaller ones. They fit great under the over hang of the rear bed.
I am sure I can add more... :)

Beaverkill Campground in the Catskills

I made reservations for the weekend because there was only a 10 percent chance of rain. Well...Friday the forecast changed. It rained off and on Saturday and Sunday. I did get some play time in though. It felt more like September..so no tubing. Saturday morning I caught a beautiful rainbow trout, 14 inches. A buddy of mine came and ate it for dinner..cooked on the campfire. Sunday morning I went back to my spot. They were biting like crazy, but my hook was wrong. I caught a 10 inch brown trout. I tossed him back. I then changed to a bigger hook and caught another 14 inch rainbow. Not a bad weekend at all.
My site was right on the river. When I was up in VT a few weeks ago. The Catskills also got hammered with rain. The river I was on was up 6 feet. It still was higher than I was a month ago. The roads were in really rough shape and some of the bridges were still closed.
The mattresses I got from Ikea are the best. It couldn't be more comfortable.

Here is a flyer that I got from Gary who owns a Metz. It has some great info on it. This is not for mine. I have the 15m. Mine is equipped with everything except for the gas light and canvas bunk. I plan on installing a gas light at some point over the dinette. I also plan on installing more 12v lights. I also need to get a new water tank. I have both the city water and hand pump on the sink.

Bromley Mountain

I spent my last full day mainly cleaning up and drying things out. I did manage to take a 3 hour hike up Bromley where I was treated to great views of Equinox, Stratton and a 360 view of the green mountains. A storm came along and started to rain when I got to the bottom. That night a violent storm lit the black sky. I decided to head to my friends restaurant...and have a good meal.

It started out a dry walk. Down the West River from my campground is Ball Mt. Lake and Dam. The West River Trail passes over the dam. There a nine switchbacks on the one side. Hamilton Falls is the tallest water falls in VT. It was just beautiful...even though a thunderstorm erupted when I got there...and I was 2 miles from my car.

Despite it seeming like a rainforest, I had a great time. I was so happy to be in a tin can...unlike my soggy wet nylon neighbors. It wasn't all rain...here is a pic of the set up with the new awning. I need to install a third pole. I got a hanging tent for inside my canopy and it worked great. I used it as a dry space...and outdoor screen room.

Well, I finished the awning. I will take photos next week when she is all set up at her site in VT. I spent the weekend getting her ready for a 9-night adventure in VT. Now that I have used the dorf a few times, I am realizing what works and what doesn't. I don't need a hanging closet, that's for sure. So I just put up two shelves in the closet. I will probably modify them or add more. I just wanted a start to better organize the space. I also got a hanging tent for inside my dining canopy. I wanted wind walls for rainy days. Well the full tent that hangs inside the canopy cost the same. I will take photos of it next week. I had never seen such a tent. I would like more screen area, but I think it will be good.

The Antenna...

I got an antenna that is really a reproduction for an airstream. Well..the dorf must have thicker walls than and airstream. I think they are about 1.5 inches thick. So. I need to adapt the antenna to attach it to the trailer. I really like the antenna and think it will be a nice addition to the exterior. The stereo I have is great. I can put two more speaker on it. I want to get out door speakers I think.

Beaverkill Campground

This past weekend I went to Beaverkill Campground in the Catskills. Too bad my camera batteries died. I had a great spot right on the river. The Beaverkill is a great trout stream. We went tubing down the river...and could see a deep pool full of HUGE trout. While tubing a bald eagle flew about 25 feet over our heads and landed on the bank of the river. He was then chased away by 2 crows. Later that day, I caught a 17 inch trout.

I ordered my supplies for the awning from Sailrite. They have some good videos about their products. I think I am going to make a 9 foot canopy. I don't want it to look too huge in comparison to the camper.

Well the 63 sold for $3,050. I was glad it sold for more then I have put into mine.
This past weekend I went to Margaret Lewis Norrie Campground on the Hudson River. It definately is not great for tents...very rocky and few flat spots. The campground is on the Hudson River just north of the FDR and Vanderbilt estates. I canoed out on the Hudson and fished a little. These huge fish were jumping... like 3-footers...one evening. The campground isn't the best maintained, but the Hudson River is just spectacular. Hyde Park is a nice little town too. Being only 40 miles from home was definatley a plus.

I spent my first nasty thunderstorms in the camper. The awning windows are great in the rain. I hope I am still loving them in August heat!

The beach that I landed on was full of very smooth stones. I forgot to charge my camera before I went...so these are some shots with my cell phone.

I got the light-weight canoe. It is really pretty stable. Plenty of space. Here I am paddling it with all the gear of my friends who where kayaking.

This is the Basher Kill wetlands in Sullivan County, New York. We saw frogs, all sorts of fish, blue herons, osprey, bald eagles (and babies in nest), red-winged black birds, water snakes and lots of flowers.

Window gasket

I installed the new gasket on four windows...I think I am short about a foot of the grey gasket. Was so easy to install. I would have liked to polished the windows before doing this, but it really needed to be done. One window the gasket would sometimes come out when I towed the camper.

The Cost of Gas

Well I get 16 mpg towing the camper, which really isn't that bad. But, I have decided to not venture not so far this weekend. I changed my reservations to be 100 miles closer to home,,, saving me about $60 in gas. I am staying at a campground right on the Hudson River. It doesn't seem as crowded (booked) so I think it should be a good weekend. I can canoe from the park...if the River isn't too rough.

Tomorrow I am going to look at a new toy for my vacation rig. The mice ate my Avon (inflatable boat). I need a boat that the mutt can go in. I think I am going to get a Nova Craft Bob Special 15 foot canoe. Light enough to put on the Subaru. I need to get out on the water where ever I go.... with the mutt. He isn't good enough for a tandem kayak. I have a HUGE canoe that I can't lift by myself. I hope the 50 lb canoe will be OK.

This weekend I need to reset the camper for another excursion...maybe work on the flooring.

Winhall Brook Camping Area, the movie

This little film is a clip of my site at Winhall Brook Camping Area. I took this on Memorial Day...after most people left. Even when there were lots of people there, it wasn't so crazy. In the screen room I have set up a Coleman camping kitched and picnic table. I also use the Coleman hotwater on demand...which works great. I find camping in Vermont much dustier than the Adirondacks in NY. These sites are $16 per night..no electric or water. Some sites are great...others I find bunched up on top of each other.

Memorial Day Weekend

For Memorial Day Weekend I set up camp at Winhall Brook Camping Area in Vermont. It is an Army Corp Site. My spot was located right at the confluence of Winhall Brook and the West River. This time my weekend was 5 nights, so I really got to work on figuring out how to set up the camper.

I have a hanging closet that I think I would rather turn into a shelving unit for storage. I used my thule carrier on the ground for suitcases and got clothes as needed. I need more storage hooks near the door for keys, lighters, etc. The solar panel works great for recharging the 12v system. I haven't figured out how I want to route the wire...right now I am shutting in the door. I was doing all my cooking outside...until my butane stove ran out of gas. So, I fired up the burner inside for my coffee. I wouldn't want to cook anything too smelly. Having the propane heater is awesome... it works so well that I actually have to keep a window open. I was about 40 one night.

Jamaica State Campground in Vermont. Was supposed to be crappy weather...ended up being great. I didn't even really need the heater...but tried it out. I drove up in torrential rain...and the front window leaked a little, but just during the drive. Was a great weekend. The pup enjoyed it too. Didn't catch any fish. The mattress from Ikea was amazingly comfy.

Tunes and power!

So I installed the deep cycle battery that I will keep charged with a solar panel. There is one existing 12v light. I installed two 12v outlet plugs and the stereo. The car stereo plugs in satellite, usb, ipod, zune, and cd. It has 6 speakers but I only put in two for now. I want to get some exterior speakers. The stereo also has a remote.. which is why I didn't really care about the location under the table. I wanted it out of view.
